The European Court of Justice's decision that gene editing should be regulated as genetic modification has wide implications for plant science and agriculture. However, the original EU legislation for environmental releases of GMOs already allows for more flexibility to regulate gene‐edited plants.

A common argument against gene editing the human germline is the notion of dignity as linked to the human genome. But this based on a logical fallacy and should rather prompt us to consider gene editing for therapeutic purposes in order to preserve human dignity.

The lack of efficient drugs to treat some forms of severe and chronic pain, along with the opioid addiction crisis in the USA, has spurred research to develop safer or more efficient alternatives to opioid pain killers.

Cancer cells often rely on alternate modes of translation initiation for protein synthesis and growth. This review discusses how stressed cancer cells exploit non‐canonical translation initiation, highlighting the importance of translational control for tumorigenesis.

S‐palmitoylation is a reversible post‐translational modification that alters the localization, stability, and function of proteins. This review highlights how S‐palmitoylation modulates oncogenes and tumor suppressors, and discusses the prospects for targeting the enzymes involved therapeutically.

IFI16‐β, a novel transcript isoform of IFI16 is a functional homolog of mouse p202 and inhibits the AIM2 inflammasome. IFI16‐β impedes AIM2‐ASC complex formation and blocks cytoplasmic dsDNA sensing of AIM2.

The inflammasomes are innate immune complexes that drive the release of active cytokines (IL‐1β and IL‐18) and induce pyroptotic cell death. The deubiquitinases USP7 and USP47 regulate inflammasome activation in macrophages.
