EU Exchange Programme for healthcare managers

Registration for the European Hospital and Healthcare Federation's (HOPE) 2018 Exchange Programme is now open. The programme, hosted int he UK by the NHS Leadership Academy, consists of a four-week placement abroad to 'experience' another healthcare system. Applications for this leadership programme have to be submitted by 31 October, both for managers willing to travel to another country and for organisations interested in hosting colleagues from abroad. 

Brexit and the NHS - stay informed

The fourth issue of our NHS Brexit Bulletin provides an update on the Brexit Health Alliance and a wealth of analysis and resources to make sense of what leaving the EU will mean for the NHS and healthcare sector. Download your copy

Preparing for changes to data privacy law 

The UK Government has recently published the Data Protection Bill, intended to implement new data privacy standards as set out in new EU legislation. Our office has assisted in the development of this briefing, published by the Information Governance Alliance, which highlights the actions to be considered by health organisations to prepare for the changes. 

EU seeks views on digital innovation in health

The European Commission has launched a public consultation on how Europe should promote digital innovation in health and care, for the benefit of citizens and health systems. Feedback from the consultation will be taken into account as the Commission develops its future strategy for support in this area. Deadline for responses is 12 October. 

Exempting healthcare professions from EU proposals on 'proportionality test'

Our office is joining forces with other European healthcare employers, trade unions and professional organisations, to ensure that member states will be able to continue to protect public health by regulating healthcare professions to be excluded from the scope of the 'proportionality test' proposed by the European Commission, which could limit countries' ability to introduce new rules to regulate professions. 

Innovative Medicines Initiative launches new calls

The Innovation Medicines Initiative has launched new calls for proposals on a number of topic areas, including the development of technology enabled ways to measure functional decline in people with early stage Alzheimer's disease and analysing the use of vaccines to improve healthy years in ageing populations. The calls are two stage with the first deadline on 24 October 2017. See the full list of topics for more information. 

Horizon 2020 Health Info Day

NHS organisations are invited to a free information day aimed at supporting collaboration and promoting funding opportunities available for health, demographic change and well-being through Horizon 2020, the EU's research and innovation funding programme. The info day will be on 7 November in Cardiff. Please register to attend. 

Helping patients with rare or complex conditions

The European Commission has released a series of video testimonials where patients and clinicians explain how the newly established European Reference Networks will help treat and manage rare or complex conditions. The NHS leads a quarter of these networks, which bring together leading providers from across Europe to tackle medical conditions that require highly specialised treatment and a concentration of knowledge and resources. 

European Prostate Cancer Awareness Day 

Our office co-organised a Prostate Cancer Awareness Day last month in the European Parliament in Brussels. The aim of the event was to raise awareness and understanding of the management of prostate cancer and influence EU decision-makers in how they can support positive changes in diagnosis and treatment of the disease. 

Health in the digital society

Estonia, which currently holds the rotating EU Presidency, will organise a high-level conference on e-health in Tallinn on 16-18 October, which will address how digital technologies and the wider use and sharing of health data can add value to health and care systems and services. Registration is open.
